Willdan’s innovative engineering solution focused on fixing the air distribution, and then only increasing the total airflow and ventilation airflow required by the new system during times of peak activity. We replaced two aging constant-volume, outside-air heating and dehumidification systems with two new variable volume units. Two new AHUs provided additional outside air for chloramine removal and dehumidification during periods of heavy occupancy when needed, and were specified with highly efficient plate-to-plate heat reclaim coils and additional compressorized heat recovery on the final exhaust air. Existing atmospheric pool heating boilers and domestic hot water heater were replaced with new high-efficiency condensing boilers and heat exchangers.

Prior to making any upgrades, we were spending more than a quarter of our budget, or $250,000 a year, on natural gas and electricity,” said Dallas Community Development Director Jason Locke. After 10 months, the aquatic center realized energy savings of $75,300, which exceeded the annual guaranteed energy savings of $56,800. That success will shorten the estimated payback period from six years to around four years.
Hood River Aquatic Soaks up the Sun
From March through October, solar is the primary (and often the only) heating source for the 281,000-gallon recreation pool in Hood River, Oregon. After September, the solar system is turned off and drained, and the new high-efficiency condensing boiler takes over. These improvements save about $17,000 in energy costs per year.
N. Clackamas Big Surf! Nets Big Savings
Willdan performed an energy audit of the aquatic park facilities and developed a contract to provide new equipment – while at the same time trimming the park’s yearly utility bill by $56,000 per year. The $846,000 project is making the park more energy efficient with funds used to replace 35- to 50-year-old boilers, upgrade lighting and renew building controls.
The new high-efficiency air handling unit with heat recovery brings in significantly more outside air, which keeps humidity levels down, helps regulate the temperature and reduces the amount of condensed air that can settle on equipment and cause corrosion. The system also includes a plate-style heat exchanger and heat pump reclaim system that uses excess heat to warm the air or water as needed.
Hillsboro Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center
The City of Hillsboro, Oregon, realized both energy savings and increased comfort in its three pools and recreation center by replacing its heating and cooling system and heat recovery unit, removing shower boilers and installing LED lighting, among other improvements.
